Watercolour and acrylic classes are into their 3rd week. Watercolour 1 are beginning to paint a rose- using a grid to draw out their image, and practicing hard and soft edges. Watercolour Explorations began working on large florals in the style of American watercolorist Birgit O'Connor: working on heavy 300lb. paper, which is not taped or stapled down, using large brushes and lots of water to move the paint around... Here are some pics of our work -- none are completed yet. The beginning acrylic class is looking at creating form with value and colour. Here are some practice pieces of shapes and clouds.
Day 2 of our Watercolour Explorations class. We looked at ways to use watercolour on other surfaces- so as to not have to mat and frame under glass. We tried :
• mounting a watercolour on a wood panel--- applying heavy gel medium ( we used Golden brand) onto a wood panel and then affixing a finished watercolour. After drying and trimming the piece is protected with varnish ( we used Kamar Varnish, by Krylon). • painting watercolour on canvas- we used QoR Cold press Ground to prepare a canvas for painting with watercolours. We protected them with Kamar Varnish or Dorlands Wax Medium ( for a more soft finish). Just finished another wonderful workshop with Cindy Mersey. Last year we did a non-representational workshop here in my studio--- conceptual abstract fun! This year she showed us her explorations and insights into decollage (the taking away of material--- peeling back layers of paper and paint).
Seven artists played and pulled, puttered and painted, and ultimately created some very cool artworks!! Here are some photos of the creations -- (not all are finished): So happy to be starting the classes up again- energizing and social as they are!! Today the 'advanced' watercolour group got started and will be exploring lots of different ways to use watercolour: on canvas, on Yupo paper, mounted on board, with acrylic paint, as well as as a way to journal your travels.
Today we began by doing travel sketches using ink and watercolour. Fun, and hopefully it got everyone excited to try it out while travelling or just enjoying the outdoors close to home. |
